Week 1

court house.jpg

This first week of my internship at the Concord District Court has been very eye-opening. Most of my week consisted of familiarizing myself with the office, observing court in session, and performing some organizational tasks. The work environment is business casual–the office is very busy so people tend to dress in practical clothing while still maintaining a level of professionalism. However, Fridays are casual!

I really enjoy being in the Clerks office because I am able to see how much work and preparation is needed to be able to hear a case, no matter how small. The whole process is much more involved than I previously imagined. This week I was able to watch how a jury is picked to hear a trial. The judge asked a large group of people questions and eventually, the group was reduced to only six jurors and one alternate.

One thing that has surprised me is how many cases involve mental health. Moving forward I think it will be interesting to see more of this and how the judicial system in Concord deals with these type of cases.
