Week 1

The main focus for me this week was to meet all the students and become familiar with the classroom setting. For the first few days, I observed many of the lessons and activities and focused on becoming a part of Ms. Henry’s class. All of the students were extremely welcoming and loved having an extra person to work with.

I started each day by helping Ms. Henry prepare for the day’s activities; sometimes I copied papers, other times I helped organize activities. When the students arrived they always had morning work to do, and during this time I walked around and met each student. After morning work, we transition into writing by either reading or story or going over a lesson. This week the students have been working on persuasive writing. During this time, I either work with individual students or work with table groups. When Ms. Henry gives a lesson I typically observe how she teaches and gives the lesson. After writing, the students have a snack. During this time, Ms. Henry puts on a Brainpop video or book on tape. Next is reading, during reading, I have been working with specific reading groups. One day I worked with students who were writing non-fiction books, another day I played sight word bingo, and some days I read with the children. The students then head to lunch, and this is my free time and prep time. After lunch, the students come back and we start the math lesson. Some days we play a game to get started, and others there is a lesson taught by Ms. Henry.

Overall, the first week has been a great introduction to first grade! The students are wonderful and I have already learned so much from Ms. Henry!
