WEEK 3

Week three has been amazing, but the start was a little tough because we just came back from break. Everyone needs a little refresher about how school works when we get back from break, and every teacher is a little more exhausted on that first day back. Now all the students are familiar with me and I am familiar with the students which makes interning a lot comfortable and fun! This week I started reading to the students a few mornings and by the end of the week, I lead them in the morning meeting routine a few times. I love reading to the children because they are so enthusiastic about books and just love learning. Read aloud is a perfect time to tell a story and really deepen students and comprehension of books and embrace their enthusiasm. Ms. Henry has also given me a reading group to work with every day which has been an engaging opportunity. There are five different groups (based on reading level) in the class with anywhere from 3-5 students in each. When I work with a group, students usually read a book and answer comprehension questions. My role is to guide and stretch their thinking while they read. I really love working with the small groups, I think the students appreciate the individual attention and you get to focus on specific student’s strengths and weaknesses. During writing time, I have also been able to work with students individually. Now that I am more acquainted with the students and vise versa, they feel more comfortable coming to me with spelling questions, ideas, and just overall guidance. It is extremely impressive to see what these 6 and 7 year-olds are writing about. Overall week three has been great and I cannot wait to see what the next few weeks have in store.
