Describe what you accomplished at your internship this week. Be specific in describing the knowledge you have gained and the skills you have developed.
Over the last 3 weeks, I have done a lot of observing and holding of dogs and learning what points often on a dog's face or cat's face helps in a sense keep them calm. It has also really opened my eyes to the small animal world vs what I've grown up within the equine world. One of the very first things that I learned was when holding a dog you put one arm under its stomach and one in front of their chest to keep them in place but leaves the Dr. access to the rest of their body. But overall it has really just given me more of an inside look on the small animal world.
Discuss a difficult, challenging, and/or awkward situation you faced during your internship and describe how you handled it. What have you learned from this experience?
I mean overall I don't feel as though there have been all to many awkward situations while being in the practice. I think if I'd have to pick one it would be times where the doctor asks me to get something and I don't know where it is so I end up having to quickly find a tech to ask where what they are looking for is. I've been able to learn its okay to ask these questions and then when I ask where something is I then learn and know where it is for the future.
How is the internship changing your impression on your career/field as a whole?
I mean overall I've always known I've wanted to go into something animal-related but this has really given me a view on how different the small animal world is from the large animal/equine world but also how similar they are in some areas. It is much more of a private environment vs when the vet is at the barn that is overall a very public setting and it isn't as easy to bring a horse into the practice then it is a dog or cat into the practice. I'm overall really grateful for the chance I've had to experience I've had so far because of the new view it's given me.
